The airport became operational in 1928 in Tampa, Florida in the United States of America, named as Drew Field Municipal Airport. During the Second World War it was used and ran by the United States Army Air Force. The airport opened to civilian flights after the war and in 1950 it changed its name to Tampa International Airport. In 1952, a second terminal building was set up at Tampa International Airport. In 1968, construction began on a new terminal building and since 1971 this terminal building has been serving passengers. As the passenger traffic increased at Tampa International Airport, expansion renovations throughout the airport was carried out many times during the 80's and 90's. At Tampa International Airport it has direct flights to 85 regions in North and Central America, Europe and Asia and manages to exceed an average of 18 million passengers annually.
