About Patara
The village of Patara, located in the popular holiday town of Kaş on the Mediterranean Sea, was founded by the Lycians and held an important commercial role in the Roman and Byzantine Empires. Today ruins uncovered by archaeologists attract vacationers on their way to the long sandy stretch of Patara’s preserved natural shore. The Roman theatre, Arch of Modestus, and world’s first parliament building are among the most important monuments. Visitors can enjoy exploring many other historical gems, like Patara’s Roman baths and nearly 2000-year-old lighthouse. The town is also famous as the birthplace of the third century monk St. Nicholas, later popularized as Santa Claus.
Patara is Turkey’s longest beach, and one of the longest in the world. Its natural beauty is preserved thanks to efforts to protect surrounding ruins and Loggerhead turtles, who have laid their eggs on the shore for millions of years. Areas of shallow waters make it a popular swimming destination for families, while playful waves attract surfers. A single café run by the local government offers respite from the sun, small meals and snacks, as well as umbrellas and lounge chairs. A modest fee permits entry to both the ruins and the beach. Those wanting to reach Patara can fly into Dalaman Airport, about 110 km away.
